Q&A: Participants: Eligible Expenses

Question: Are expenses for cosmetic surgery eligible under the Health FSA?

Answer:

Cosmetic surgery is not eligible for medical reimbursement except for amounts paid for surgery necessary to improve a deformity arising from congenital abnormality, personal injury from an accident or trauma, or a disfiguring disease.  A written statement of certification is required from the medical provider.  "Cosmetic surgery" means any procedure that is directed at improving the patient's appearance and does not meaningfully promote the proper function of the body or prevent or treat illness or disease.
