Status Changes

Occasionally a participant will request a change in his plan contributions. Medical insurance premiums may change or new benefits may be added that affect your Flexible Benefit Plan. Strict guidelines control when such a change may be granted.

"Changes in Status" are outlined in the IRS Regulations governing Flexible Benefit Plans.

There are 2 requirements for allowing a participant to change his/her benefit elections as a result of a Change in Status:

  1. A recognized Change in Status event must have occurred,
  2. The election change being requested must be consistent with that event.

The consistency rule asks, "Is the change in status on account of and corresponding with a change in status event that affects eligibility for coverage by the employee, spouse, or dependent under an employer's plan?" If this general test is met, then one proceeds to specific tests applicable to each specific type of coverage. Yes, it gets complicated!  If you have a question about a specific change in status, please feel free to contact us.

To request a status change on behalf of a plan participant, please complete the Status Change Form and submit it to ProBenefits, Inc.

Remember... only certain events allow a participant to change his/her benefit election.

Status Changes must be made within 30 days of the change using the Status Change Form provided. The Status Change form must be signed by both participant and employer.

Special Notes on Insurance Premiums

Please carefully review our "Questions and Answers" on Insurance Premiums covering common questions about pre-tax insurance premiums, including why participants cannot drop pre-tax coverages mid-year.
